Introduction To Retirement Home upkeep

Retirement Homes are an important part of our society, providing our elders with a place to rest and relax with round the clock care. Unfortunately, it’s often neglected in terms of cleaning. Read this article to learn how we can better tend to our senior citizens and keep Nursing Homes clean with a couple of quick tips!

Firstly: The Floors

We asked a Nursing Home staff member what needs the most attention regarding Retirement Home upkeep. The first thing that they mentioned was the floors.

Floor cleaning is something that is often forgotten, or a job that is done half way. Dirt on the floors is not comfortable for the eyes, or to walk in. Especially when it leaves your shoes feeling dusty.

“The floors of a commercial building are one of the first things that people notice when they enter. Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep them looking their best, extend their life, and create a hygienic environment,”

The most effective method of cleaning hard surface floors would be to:

  • First, sweep up any surface material, such as dust and dirt

Sweeping first is highly important. When you sweep last, or do not sweep at all, stray particles can get stuck to the wet mop and only spread the particles around.

  • Next, apply a “pH-neutral” cleaner in order to avoid damaging the floor’s finish

Some common pH-neutral floor cleaners include brands like Bona, Zep, Method, Quick Shine, and OdoBan, which are designed for various sealed surfaces and effectively remove dirt without damaging finishes or leaving haze.

  • Finally, wipe down the surface with a gentle tool, such as a microfiber mop

If you use a tool that is too rough, like a scrub brush, you can risk damaging the floor’s finish by scratching it up. Microfiber is productive and goes easy on hard floors, resulting in a soft but flawlessly clean result for Retirement Home upkeep.

Secondly: The Tables

The next thing that this staff member mentioned was the dining tables.

For the sake of visitors, but especially the residents, a clean table during mealtime is essential. No one enjoys the feeling of a sticky surface as you are trying to eat.

“Maintaining tables free of crumbs, spills, and germs requires a combination of effective habits, proper tools, and teamwork.”

Three vital tips for keeping the cafeteria clean and comfortable:

  • Act quickly with new spills by keeping supplies within reach

Its best to clean up fresh spills as soon as they are spotted. Leaving food or drink out for extended periods of time risks long term destruction such as staining.

  • Clean the table edges and bases (not just the surface)

The most obvious thing to clean is the surface of the table, but often times the edges and bases of the table end up forgotten. However, these places are important to clean, as they are where everyone ends up touching when they sit down.

  • Sanitize between every seating

Sanitizing between every seating is incredibly important, keeping germs at bay when a new person is seated and a fresh meal is served.
